About this spot

The head temple of Jodo Shinshu's Takada School, whose Miedo Hall and Nyorai Hall were designated as national treasures in 2017. As Mie Prefecture's first nationally-designated treasure building, it has drawn considerable attention, with both being stately wooden structures built during the Edo period. The extensive grounds are dotted with historic structures such as the Somon Gate, Sanmon Gate, and Karamon Gate, and its scale and solemn atmosphere rank among the finest in the nation. Locals affectionately call it "Takada Honzan-san" and it is one of Tsu City's leading cultural heritage sites. It is close to Akogigaura Beach, the site of the evening fireworks, making it ideal as the final stop on your tour.

Tips

About 15 minutes by bus from Tsu Station (get off at Takada Honzan stop), or about 10 minutes by car. The grounds can be viewed free of charge. For worship inside the national treasure halls, please confirm the hours and requirements at the temple. Akogigaura Beach is about 10 minutes by car; if using the bus, access via Tsu Station.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. In the afternoon, the soft light beautifully highlights the wood grain of the national treasure buildings.
