About this spot

Located in the mountains about 10km west of Hisai Camp, Sakakibara Onsen (榊原温泉) is a historic hot spring resort known as a famed spa recorded by Sei Shonagon in The Pillow Book. The Yunose River (湯の瀬川), which flows through the hot spring town, runs alongside a lush green ravine, and simply strolling while listening to the sound of the river eases the summer heat. Taking a break in this cool natural setting before evening lets you approach the long night of fireworks viewing with more ease. Stopping by a hot spring facility for a quick soak also makes for a luxurious refresh before watching the fireworks.

Tips

About a 20-25 minute drive from Hisai Station. Bus services are limited, so using a private car or rental car is convenient. If you'd like to bathe in the hot spring, check each facility's reception hours and rates in advance. Considering the travel time to the fireworks venue, plan to depart by 5:15 PM.
