About this spot

Located in Takima, Miyazu City, this is the only waterfall in Kyoto Prefecture selected among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls (日本の滝百選). Water falls about 40 meters high and 20 meters wide, splitting left and right down the rock face; the right side is called Otaki (male falls) and the left Metaki (female falls). Together with Hakuryu and Garyu (白龍・臥龍) downstream, they are collectively known as Kanebiki Falls, and the falls are also known for maintaining an abundant flow of water year-round. The pool at the base is shallow and you can get right up close to the flow, so you can feel the cool mist up close even on a hot summer afternoon. It's a place where you can cool off at your own pace ahead of the night of the fireworks festival.

Tips

Get to central Miyazu from Amanohashidate Station (天橋立駅) by bus or taxi. The downtown area is compact enough to get around on foot. Taking care of restroom breaks and stocking up on drinks during this window will make your move in the evening smoother.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The light before evening sets off the white walls of the storehouses beautifully
