Next stop: Overlook the Vast Kushiro Wetlands from the Observation Tower in the National ParkAbout this spot
The Kushiro City Museum is known for its unique exterior, designed with a red-crowned crane (Tancho) spreading its wings. The museum displays exhibits about the formation and ecosystem of Kushiro Wetlands, wildlife, Ainu culture, and the history of Kushiro's industries and fisheries, offering a wide range of displays on the nature and culture of Eastern Hokkaido. The museum is well-stocked with dioramas, fossils, and taxidermy that appeal to children's interests, making it an excellent facility for families. The exhibits also serve as great preparation for visiting the Kushiro Wetlands Observation Tower later, and seeing the displays before visiting the wetlands will help you appreciate the natural environment more deeply. As an introductory destination for understanding Kushiro, this is definitely a place you'll want to visit early in your afternoon itinerary.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Kushiro Station, and also accessible by local bus. Admission is 480 yen for adults, free for children (fees vary by age, so check the official website for confirmation). The museum may be closed on Mondays, so check opening hours in advance. Some areas within the museum allow photography while others do not.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. Early afternoon hours are relatively quiet, allowing you to view exhibits at a leisurely pace.
