About this spot

Built on the slopes of Mama-san (真間山), this old Nichiren-sect temple is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki (行基) during the Nara period. Ancient cedar trees line both sides of the stone-step approach, and once inside the grounds you're wrapped in a stillness that seems to ease the summer heat. Historic structures such as the Nio Gate (仁王門) and main hall (本堂) still remain, making it one of Ichikawa's leading cultural properties. There is also a viewpoint within the grounds overlooking the streets of Ichikawa. It's a quintessentially Ichikawa spot where you can spend a moment connecting with local history before the fireworks.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Satomi Park (里見公園). Free to visit. Wear comfortable shoes, as there are long flights of stone steps. In summer, the shade within the grounds is pleasant and makes for a good short rest. Nearby Manyo-era (万葉) sites such as Mama no Tsugihashi Bridge (真間の継橋) and Tekona Reijindo (手児奈霊神堂) are also within walking distance, so you can stop by if you have time.

About 45 minutes. In the afternoon, the cedar-lined approach looks beautiful in the dappled sunlight
