About this spot

This observatory sits atop Gyobu-misaki (刑部岬), a cliff about 60 meters high right next to Iioka Coast (飯岡海岸). Below, Iioka Coast, where tonight's fireworks festival will be held, and the long sandy shore of Kujukuri Beach (九十九里浜) spread out, and on clear days you can take in the Pacific Ocean (太平洋) all the way to the horizon. In autumn, the clear air makes for especially good visibility, and it's handy to get a sense of tonight's viewing spot from this daytime view. A promenade is maintained around the observatory, where you can stroll while feeling the sea breeze. There is a stretch of the access road only wide enough for one car, so drive carefully.

Tips

About a 5-minute drive from Iioka Coast (飯岡海岸), or about a 15-minute walk uphill. Admission to the observatory is free. Parking space is limited, so arrive early during busy times. It can be quite windy near the tip of the cape along the promenade, so hold small children's hands while walking.

About 1 hour. In autumn afternoons, the light is soft and the blue of the sea really stands out
