A market spreading out beneath the elevated tracks at Beppu Station, cherished for more than half a century as the local residents' kitchen. Over 20 shops line the market, including fishmongers, an eel specialist, dried-fish sellers, an udon shop, a baked-sweets shop, and a florist, offering everything from groceries to everyday goods. Browsing here to cool off in the evening while resting from the hell-pond tour lets you feel the everyday bustle of Beppu. You can choose a light snack on the go or a proper sit-down dinner, making it an easy place to match your family's pace.

Tips

About 25 minutes by bus from Kannawa back to Beppu Station. Accessible from either the west or east exit of Beppu Station. On the day of the fireworks festival, it starts getting crowded in the evening, so eating early leaves you extra time to spare. The Kitahama Green Belt (北浜緑地帯) is about 10-15 minutes on foot from Beppu Station, so head toward the venue around 6:30 p.m.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1.5 hours. The shopping street is lively at dusk, making for just the right stroll before the fireworks
