About this spot

This is a historic townscape spreading through the center of Oh-Uda, Uda City (宇陀市大宇陀), designated as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. In the town of Uda-Matsuyama (宇陀松山), which flourished as a hub for the trade of medicinal herbs during the Edo period, the scenery of merchant houses with lattice doors and white plaster walls lining the streets is still carefully preserved today. Facilities connected to the medicinal herb culture are also scattered throughout, and simply walking around conveys Uda's history. Not being overly crowded with tourists and offering a relaxed atmosphere for strolling is also a comfortable point for families. It offers a moment to feel the history and quiet of Nara's mountain village before the fireworks festival.

Tips

Accessible from Haibara Station (榛原駅) on the Kintetsu Osaka Line or the Oh-Uda bus stop (大宇陀バス停). Use the public parking lot near the district. You can stroll for free, though some facilities may charge admission. Summer sunlight is strong, so do not forget a hat and to stay hydrated.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. Afternoon slanting light shines on the white walls, making the townscape look beautiful
