Shiogama City Fish Market (塩竈市魚市場)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This is a unique port town spot where you can savor fresh seafood right on the spot at Shiogama's nakaoroshi market, where abundant seafood from Sanriku gathers. Shiogama is known as one of Japan's leading ports for tuna landings, and you can enjoy fresh tuna lean and medium fatty tuna at reasonable prices. The food stalls and dining corners within the market offer seafood rice bowls and nigiri sushi, and Shiogama specialties such as salted fish roe and sasa-kamaboko (bamboo leaf-shaped fish cake) are also plentiful as souvenirs. Since everywhere becomes crowded from evening onwards on the fireworks festival day, it's wise to settle lunch and souvenir shopping here in advance.

Tips

Approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Honshiogama Station, and approximately 15 minutes on foot from Shiogama Shrine. Business hours vary by shop, so arriving by 2 PM is safe. Store purchased items like sasa-kamaboko in a cooling bag. During crowded times, there may be some wait.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. Early afternoon hours allow relatively quick entry
