About this spot

A historic site developed on the small hill said to have been home to the residence of the Watari-Date clan (亘理伊達氏), where Watari Town Local History Museum (亘理町郷土資料館) now stands. Inside, exhibits on Watari's history and materials related to the Date clan let you learn about the area's origins in a compact format. Being on a hilltop, the surrounding views are excellent, and on clear days you can make out the direction of the Pacific Ocean beyond the town. It's also a handy spot for getting your bearings on tonight's fireworks venue while it's still light out. Offering a calmer moment distinct from livelier spots, it makes for a quiet accent within the day.

Tips

About a 10-minute drive from Torinoumi Coast (鳥の海海岸). Admission to the Local History Museum is around 100 yen for adults (subject to change, so check on-site). The exhibits are compact enough to see in a short time even with children in tow. Check the closing time in advance and allow yourself a comfortable margin for the visit.
