Walking through the Edo-period merchant street adorned with goldfish lanterns
About this spot
The approximately 200-meter townscape remaining in the center of Yanai City is a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, where merchant buildings that flourished during the Edo period through cotton trade still stand in rows. The street lined with white plastered walls and latticed doors becomes decorated with red goldfish lanterns during the Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival period, further enhancing the summer atmosphere. Yanai is also known as the birthplace of kanro soy sauce, and along the street, long-established soy sauce breweries founded during the Edo period continue to operate. Although it's a compact area spanning only 10 to 15 minutes on foot, the attractions are concentrated, making it ideal for leisurely spending time before the festival. Goldfish lanterns are traditional crafts of Yanai, and exhibitions and sales are held at various locations. Walking through the townscape in detail during the bright afternoon hours will make the contrast with the festival lights at night even more enjoyable.

柳井金魚ちょうちん祭りのフィナーレを飾る、柳井港周辺からの花火大会です。夜空に約4,000発が次々と打ち上がり、港の水面に映る光の帯とともに夏の夜を彩ります。金魚ちょうちんの赤い灯りがゆれる祭りの夜に咲く花火は、柳井ならではの独特の美しさがあります。海沿いの開けた場所から見る花火は視界が広く、音の迫力も十分。家族みんなで潮風に吹かれながら見上げる約1時間は、夏の記憶として刻まれる時間になるはずです。フィナーレの連発が夜空と水面を同時に照らす瞬間が、このコースの最大のクライマックスです。

開催時刻は大会公式情報で事前に確認してください(時間未定のため変更の可能性があります)。荒天時の中止や延期は公式発表で確認を。終了後は柳井駅周辺が大変混雑するため、フィナーレ後は少し港で余韻を楽しんでから動くと混雑を避けやすいです。帰りの電車の時刻は事前に調べておきましょう。
Tips
About 5 minutes on foot from JR Yanai Station (柳井駅). Admission is free, and you can freely stroll along the street. Some long-established soy sauce shops may offer tours or sales, so feel free to stop by if interested. Since there are crowds from daytime on the festival day, exploring early is recommended for a more relaxed walk.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The sun is strong during this season, so don't forget a hat and water for hydration.
