About this spot

A rice storage warehouse complex built in the Meiji era, known as the symbol of Shonai, Japan's rice country. White-walled earthen storehouses stand in neat rows, and behind them stretches a zelkova tree-lined avenue planted for both sun and wind protection. The double-roof design and other natural temperature-control innovations throughout the complex, such as allowing summer heat to escape, demonstrate sophisticated craftsmanship. It served as an active rice warehouse until recent years. A nationally designated historic site that conveys the history of Sakata, a port town that prospered as a hub of North Front Ship trade, it is also famous as a filming location for the NHK drama "Oshin." The tree-lined avenue where green zelkova trees and white walls weave together is Sakata's premier photography spot. The on-site souvenir shop "Sakata Yume no Kurabu" (酒田夢の倶楽) is brimming with Shonai specialties and souvenirs, making it perfect for grasping the overall picture of Sakata at the start of your trip.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from JR Sakata Station, also accessible by the city's circular bus. Free parking available. The zelkova tree-lined avenue, a photography favorite, is on the back side of the warehouse complex, so don't miss it. Viewing the exterior of the warehouse complex and strolling the tree-lined avenue are free. You can scout souvenirs at Sakata Yume no Kurabu and save larger purchases for the return trip to avoid carrying heavy items.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Early morning when tourists are scarce is ideal, and the morning light filtering through the tree-lined avenue is at its most beautiful
