Stroll Through the Japanese Heritage Keyaki Tree-Lined Avenue and Meiji-Era Rice Warehouses
About this spot
A group of wooden rice warehouses built in 1893 (Meiji 26), representing the historic landscape of Sakata City. Twelve warehouses stand in a row, conveying the prosperity of Sakata, a port town that flourished through water transportation on the Mogami River, and the Keyaki tree-lined avenue on the back side has served as a natural canopy to protect agricultural products from the strong summer sun. Part of the warehouses is open to the public as the Shonai Rice History Museum, where you can learn in detail about Sakata's rice culture. Known as a filming location for movies and dramas, the landscape woven by the avenue and warehouses never gets old no matter how many times you see it. The adjacent Sakata City Tourist Information Center also has a full selection of local specialties and souvenirs.
