Yamagata City's signature summer fireworks festival, with about 7,000 fireworks launched from within Kajo Park (霞城公園). The rapid-fire starmine bursts staged across the vast grounds of the castle ruins are absolutely thrilling, and the sight of fireworks blooming from near ground level up to the height of the night sky is a sense of presence unique to viewing from inside the park. Rooted in the community as an annual major event that brings Yamagata residents together on the night of Obon, it also features scenes combined with performances like taiko drumming as one of its highlights. The climactic 20:30 finale, with rapid-fire fireworks gaining momentum and filling the night sky, delivers an emotional payoff fitting for the climax of the day.

Always check official announcements from Yamagata City or the event organizer to confirm whether the event will go ahead in bad weather. JR Yamagata Station and the surrounding roads get extremely crowded right after the event ends, so it's recommended to linger in the park for a while to savor the afterglow before moving, staggering your departure. Some sections on the way back are dark underfoot, so it's reassuring to bring a small light.
