Tracing the Connection Between Matsuo Basho and Ogaki, Strolling Along the Suimon River Promenade

About this spot

A facility built to commemorate Ogaki as the final destination where the poet Matsuo Basho ended his long journey along the Okunosohomichi (奥の細道). Videos and exhibits clearly introduce Basho's journey footsteps and Ogaki's culture. The hall features abundant interactive exhibits that families can enjoy, providing an opportunity to become familiar with haiku and travel culture of the Edo period. The riverside promenade along the Suimon River (水門川) adjacent to the hall, called "Okunosohomichi Musubi no Chi," is a waterside walking path scattered with stone monuments inscribed with haiku related to Basho's journey, including a statue of Basho. The wind crossing the water surface is pleasant, and you can walk comfortably even on a humid summer afternoon.

毎年7月下旬に揖斐川河畔で開催される大垣花火大会は、岐阜県西部を代表する夏の風物詩です。川幅の広い揖斐川の河畔から見上げる花火は、頭上から広がるような大迫力で、水面に映る光の揺らぎが川辺ならではの幻想的な雰囲気を演出します。川を渡る夜風が心地よく、街中の花火大会とは一味違う涼やかさの中で観覧できます。フィナーレに向けて次々と打ち上がる花火の連発は、1日の締めくくりにふさわしい圧巻の光景です。水の都・大垣の夏の夜を、川辺の特等席で家族みんなで楽しんでください。

Tips

荒天時の開催可否は大垣市または大会主催者の公式発表で当日確認を。終了後はJR大垣駅方面へ向かう人が一斉に集中するため、フィナーレ後は少し河畔で余韻を楽しんでから移動する時間差帰宅がおすすめ。帰りの電車の時刻は事前に確認しておきましょう。足元が暗くなるのでスマートフォンのライトを活用してください。

Tips

About 10 minutes on foot from Ogaki Station and about 10 minutes from Ogaki Castle. Admission is 300 yen for adults. The riverside promenade is free to explore. The promenade has few steps and is easy to walk with a stroller. After visiting the memorial hall, walking south along the riverside aligns well with the route toward the fireworks venue on the Ibi River bank.
