The Joto District, spreading along the old Izumo Highway to the east of Tsuyama Castle, is designated as a National Important Traditional Building Group Preservation District. White-walled merchant houses, storehouses, and lattice-windowed townhouses from the Edo through Meiji periods continue in succession, creating a landscape that feels like stepping back in time. This area, which vividly retains the spirit of the castle town's prosperous days as a post station of the Tsuyama Domain, has charm not as a flashy tourist destination but as a quiet, atmosphere-rich space intertwined with local life. Simply strolling through, carefully observing the fine details of eaves and alleyways, brings the castle town's history to life. Spend the afternoon before the fireworks on a leisurely stroll through this historic district.

Tips

Approximately 5 minutes on foot from the east entrance of Tsuruyama Park. Viewing is free with no admission fee. Some streets have little shade, so remember to stay hydrated. There are displays and information boards under eaves and in alleyways—using these as guides enhances your appreciation of the history. Facilities within the district have varying opening hours, so check in advance if you wish to visit specific locations.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The afternoon slanting sunlight softly illuminates the white walls, creating excellent photo opportunities.
