About this spot

A symbolic park in central Morioka developed from the ruins of Morioka Castle, the seat of the Nanbu clan lords. Known as a rare completely stone-walled castle in the Tohoku region, the stone walls built from local white granite are truly impressive. Scenic views unfold throughout the park—including the vermillion bridge connecting the inner citadel to the second enclosure and sweeping views of Morioka's streetscape from the elevated areas. This is also the castle site immortalized in poet Ishikawa Takuboku's verse "Kurabunofu no o-shiro no kusa ni neko-robi-te." Within the park stand monuments to both Takuboku's poetry and Kenji Miyazawa's verses, infusing the space with literary charm. A leisurely walk through the lush, green park beloved as a gathering place for locals naturally imparts a sense of Morioka's history and daily life, making it the perfect warm-up to begin a full day of food exploration.

Tips

About 15 minutes walk from JR Morioka Station, or take the Dendenmusume circulating bus and get off at Morioka Castle Ruins Park. Admission is free and you can stroll freely. The park has many stone steps and slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Nearby is Sakurayama Shrine, whose approach has traditional eateries lined up, including Hakuryuu Honten which you'll visit in the afternoon.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour. A morning stroll among the stone walls in the crisp morning air is delightful and makes an ideal stomach-preparation before the food tour.
