Encounter the Life and Works of Lafcadio Hearn, Author of "Tales of the Strange," and the Story of Matsue
About this spot
This memorial museum introduces the life and works of Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), author of "Tales of the Strange" and "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan." Born in Greece and a world traveler, Hearn eventually arrived in Matsue, where he came to deeply love the town's natural environment and people, introducing Japanese culture and daily life to the world. The museum features personal items including Hearn's beloved desk and manuscripts, along with an audio exhibit of ghost stories, allowing visitors to re-experience the "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan" that Hearn discovered in Matsue. Adjacent to the museum is the historic Lafcadio Hearn Residence (小泉八雲旧居) where he actually lived; visiting both enhances understanding considerably.
Tips
Since exhibitions focus largely on written materials, it's recommended to allow ample time for a leisurely visit. A combination ticket for both the museum and adjacent Lafcadio Hearn Residence offers savings. Some exhibits have photography restrictions; please follow signage.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour duration. The quiet afternoon hours allow for contemplative engagement with the exhibits.
