A scenic landmark representative of Okuizumo, this gorge was carved by the fierce rapids of the Omaki River cutting through granite bedrock over many centuries. Designated as both a National Beauty Site and Natural Monument, the valley is filled with named massive boulders such as Hando Rock, Turtle Rock, and Senjojiki, stretching for approximately 2 kilometers. The name derives from a legend in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki (ancient records), "Wani's Shitaburu," where a crocodile (shark) that fell in love with Princess Tamahime was prevented from ascending the river. The approximately 45-meter-high Shitafuri Love Suspension Bridge at the entrance allows visitors to overlook the gorge from directly above, and a well-maintained barrier-free footpath ensures safe access to admire the impressive boulder formations up close.

Tips

Entering from the Une Parking Area allows you to cross the love suspension bridge and connect to the barrier-free footpath, which has fewer ups and downs and is easier to walk. The gorge is cool in the morning, so bringing a light cardigan is advisable. If walking along the rocky footpath, choose non-slip shoes.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Morning visits have fewer people, allowing for quiet strolls amid the light filtering into the gorge and the fresh air.
