About this spot

This ancient temple, known as the 59th sacred site of the 88 temples of Shikoku, is said to have been built by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. In the temple grounds near the Nakayama River (中山川) in Iyo City stand a splendid main hall and Daishi Hall, and the large trees that shade the grounds make it a quiet place of rest not only for pilgrims on the Shikoku pilgrimage but also for local residents. Spending a leisurely afternoon walking through the historic grounds ahead of the lively night of the fireworks festival makes for a nice accent to the day. The grounds aren't too large, so even small children can walk around comfortably.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from central Iyo City. Admission to the grounds is free, but please be quiet and respect worship etiquette at the main hall. A parking lot is available. To be ready for arriving at the evening venue, starting your next move by 3:45 p.m. at the latest gives you some breathing room.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. In the afternoon, the temple grounds are cool under the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, offering a quiet time.
