About this spot

A shrine enshrining Susanoo-no-Mikoto (素盞嗚尊), standing on the bank of the Toyo River (豊川). Old documents record that in 1560 (Eiroku 3), the castellan of Yoshida Castle began setting off fireworks during a festival, and a stone monument reading Birthplace of Tezutsu Fireworks (手筒花火発祥之地) stands beside the approach to the shrine. At the annual Toyohashi Gion Festival (豊橋祇園祭), tezutsu fireworks, hand-held tube fireworks (手筒花火), are first dedicated within the shrine grounds, and fireworks are launched from the bank of the Toyo River the following day. Stalls line the area around the venue from the evening, so once you've secured a viewing spot early, fill up on dinner from the stalls or a meal you brought along. It's a time when the river breeze feels cool and pleasant.

Tips

The bank of the Toyo River (豊川) is right next to Toyohashi Park (豊橋公園) and the Yoshida Castle ruins (吉田城址). If walking from the station area, the route through Toyohashi Park out to the riverbank is convenient. Food stalls can have long waits due to crowds, so it's reassuring to get drinks and light snacks beforehand. Be sure to use the public restrooms in the area before the show starts.
