About this spot

This temple of the Shingon Buzan school is located in Katakai-machi (片貝町), Ojiya City, and is the 14th sacred site of the Echigo 33 Kannon pilgrimage. Its mountain name is Chikeizan, its principal image is the Shokanzeon Bosatsu, and it is said to have been founded in the first year of the Daido era. The Kannon Hall is notable for its round zelkova pillars and the carvings decorating its surroundings, and a carving of a winged dragon remains on the north side. Visiting a quiet ancient temple like this before the bustle of the fireworks festival begins gives the day a nice sense of rhythm.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from central Ojiya City. Visiting the main hall requires an admission fee (check in advance for current rates). Parking is available near the temple grounds. In summer, allow enough time to visit within the visiting hours. Since you'll need to head back toward the city center before evening for the fireworks venue, be mindful of your time allocation.

About 1 hour. You can take your time admiring the carvings in the quiet temple grounds in the afternoon.
