Walk quietly through the National Treasure structures of the head temple of Tendai Jimon with over 1,300 years of history
About this spot
Formally named Nagaratoyama Onjoji (園城寺), this ancient temple was established in the late 7th century as the head temple of the Tendai Jimon School. Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Biwa at the foot of Mount Nagarato, its expansive grounds feature the National Treasure Kondo (Golden Hall) and important cultural properties including the Niomon Gate, Toin Annex, and three-tiered pagoda. The spring water from the "Akaiyu" (閼伽井屋) flowing through the grounds is known as the "Mii Spiritual Spring" and has been revered since ancient times. The stone-paved approach surrounded by trees remains cool even in midsummer, making it an ideal place to spend quiet time before the lively fireworks festival. It is also close to the Otsu Port viewing area, allowing smooth evening travel.

2026年8月6日(木)19時30分から20時30分にかけて、大津市・滋賀県営大津港沖の水面一帯から約10,000発が打ち上がるびわ湖大花火大会です。日本最大級の淡水湖である琵琶湖の広大な水面と夜空を舞台に、スターマインや大玉など多彩な仕掛けが次々と繰り広げられます。湖面に映る逆さ花火が連動して広がる光景は、海辺や陸上の花火大会では得られない独特の美しさです。周囲に遮るものがなく、空が広く開けた湖上からの打ち上げは、どこから見ても視界いっぱいに花火が広がります。フィナーレの連発で琵琶湖全体が光に包まれる瞬間は、1日のすべての時間がここに収束するクライマックスです。
Tips
荒天時の開催可否は大会公式の発表を確認してください。終了後は京阪びわ湖浜大津駅・JR大津駅周辺が大変混雑します。フィナーレ後はその場でしばらく余韻を楽しんでから移動すると、混雑を避けやすいです。帰りの電車の時刻は事前に確認しておき、混雑に備えて時間に余裕を持った計画を立てましょう。足元が暗い場所もあるのでライトを活用してください。

About 5 minutes on foot from Keihan Miidera Station. Admission is 600 yen for adults (as of 2025, subject to change). Wear comfortable walking shoes as the grounds are expansive. Bring insect repellent spray as mosquitoes may be present in the shade during summer afternoons. Closing times vary seasonally, so it's safe to leave by around 3 PM.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Afternoon dappled light creates beautiful shadows on the stone-paved paths, allowing you to enjoy the serene atmosphere.
