About this spot

Its formal name is Nagarasan Onjo-ji, an ancient temple founded at the end of the 7th century as the head temple of the Tendai Jimon sect, popularly known as Mii-dera. Spreading across the foot of Mt. Nagara on the southwestern shore of Lake Biwa, its vast grounds are lined with buildings including the National Treasure Kondo Hall, along with Important Cultural Properties such as the Nio Gate, Todo Hall, and the three-story pagoda. The spring water flowing at the 'Akai-ya' (閼伽井屋) well within the grounds is known as the 'Sacred Spring of Mii,' and has drawn worshippers since ancient times. The stone-paved approach, shaded by trees, stays cool even in midsummer, making it a fitting place to spend a quiet moment before the lively fireworks festival. It's also close to Otsu Port, the fireworks venue, so moving on in the evening is easy.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from Mii-dera Station on the Keihan Railway. Admission is 600 yen for adults (as of 2025, subject to change). The grounds are spacious, so wear comfortable walking shoes. In summer afternoons, mosquitoes can be present even in the shade, so bringing insect repellent makes for a more comfortable visit. Closing time varies by season, so it's reassuring to leave by around 3 p.m. at the latest.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The afternoon sunlight filtering through the trees makes the stone paving glow, letting you enjoy a quiet atmosphere.
