Adjacent to the grounds of Mii-dera, the Otsu City Museum of History is a facility where you can systematically learn about the history and culture of Lake Biwa and Otsu. From the ancient province of Omi to the Otsu-kyo capital and the culture and life of the lake, the region's story is presented clearly through a wealth of exhibits. Spending a leisurely summer afternoon browsing the exhibits in the cool museum is an activity that both children and adults can enjoy. Learning about the origins and cultural background of Lake Biwa, tonight's fireworks stage, adds even more depth to the evening's display. The museum is a compact size that even small children can tour comfortably.

Tips

About a 7-minute walk from Mii-dera Station, or just a short walk from the grounds of Mii-dera. Admission is around 300 yen for adults (subject to change). The museum is well air-conditioned, making it perfect for a break on a summer afternoon. Parking is available. Since the area around Otsu Port gets very crowded from evening onward on the day of the fireworks, it's a good idea to do a final check of your belongings at this point.

About 1 hour 15 minutes. A summer-friendly spot where you can cool off while browsing on a hot afternoon.
