This history museum stands on the site of Nagahama Castle (長浜城), known as the first castle undertaken by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉). Directly facing Lake Biwa's shoreline, the white castle tower reflects beautifully on the blue lake surface—a scene that represents Nagahama. From the observation deck on the top floor, you can see 360 degrees of the vast water surface of Lake Biwa and Nagahama's streetscape, with a view northward to the mountain ranges of the Yogo area where tonight's fireworks festival will be held. The museum displays Nagahama's history and materials related to Hideyoshi, with content enjoyable for families. The area around Nagahama Port (長浜港) on the lakeside is easy to walk, and there's also a grassy area where children can run around.

2026年10月16日(金)19時30分開催、長浜・北びわ湖大花火大会「余呉の陣」の観覧クライマックスです。周囲を山に囲まれた静かな余呉湖の夜空に打ち上げ花火が開くと、湖面が鏡となって光の輪を映し出す幻想的な光景が広がります。山あいに反響する打ち上げ音の迫力と、水面に広がる逆さ花火の美しさは、余呉湖ならではの見ごたえです。10月開催という珍しい秋の花火大会で、夏とは異なる澄んだ夜気の中、鮮やかな光と音の饗宴が約25分間にわたって繰り広げられます。フィナーレの余韻が静かな湖面に溶けていく瞬間まで、じっくり楽しみましょう。

Tips

荒天時の開催可否は大会公式発表を必ず確認してください。終了後はJR余呉駅に向かう人が集中するため、しばらく湖畔で余韻を楽しんでから時間差で移動するのがおすすめです。余呉駅からのJR湖西線・北陸本線の帰りの電車時刻は事前に確認し、乗り遅れのないよう余裕を持って行動しましょう。足元が暗いため小型ライトが役立ちます。

Tips

Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Kurogane-kabe Square (黒壁スクエア). Admission for adults is 410 yen. The castle tower observation deck can be windy, so bringing a light shawl or cardigan would be comfortable. The museum may be closed on Mondays, so check in advance. A pleasure boat cruise on Lake Biwa also departs from Nagahama Port.
