About this spot

This nature observation area spreads across the tip of Karasuma Peninsula, protecting reed beds and waterside vegetation unique to Lake Biwa. Boardwalks and trails are well maintained, letting you walk slowly through the lakeside reed beds while experiencing waterfowl, insects, and lake scenery up close. In summer, the reeds grow lush and green, and the breeze crossing the lake surface makes for a pleasant walking path. It's within walking distance of Mizu no Mori (みずの森) and sits right next to the Lawn Square (芝生広場), tonight's fireworks venue, making it convenient for getting a sense of the venue's atmosphere and location as well.

Tips

A few minutes' walk from Mizu no Mori (みずの森). Some sections of the trail are unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The summer afternoon sun is strong, so don't forget a hat and sunscreen. Stay hydrated as you walk. If bird watching is your goal, bringing binoculars will add to the enjoyment.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. A cool afternoon breeze blows in from the lake, and the green of the reed beds looks beautiful.
