This museum serves as a hub for learning in depth about the Yamaga Lantern Festival and the culture of its golden lanterns. Yamaga lanterns are intricate crafts made entirely from washi paper without using any wood or bamboo, and they are designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The museum uses video and actual exhibits to clearly explain the lantern-making process and the history of the lantern dance, in a way that both children and adults can enjoy. Since tonight's fireworks display is held on the same day as the Lantern Festival, understanding the festival's background beforehand will change how you see the event. It's also within easy walking distance of Sakura-yu (さくら湯).

Tips

A few minutes' walk from Sakura-yu (さくら湯). Admission is around 300 yen for adults (subject to change, so check in advance). The museum is air-conditioned, making it a great place to stop by during the hot midday hours. Some exhibits may have special displays during the Lantern Festival period. Crowds are expected on the day of the fireworks display, so the time right after opening tends to be relatively quiet.
