About this spot

This municipal zoo spreads across the hilly terrain of Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama, and mainly displays animals that live on the grasslands of Africa and South America, such as giraffes, zebras, and capybaras. Because it's located on a green, elevated hill, the grounds stay relatively cool even in summer, and you can take your time viewing while resting on benches in the shade. Admission is an affordable 500 yen even for adults, making it a popular spot for families with children. Walk a loop through the animal exhibit areas and store up energy for the evening fireworks. You can also stroll through the greenery of the adjacent Kanazawa Nature Park (金沢自然公園).

Tips

About a 20-minute bus ride from Kanazawa-Hakkei Station (金沢八景駅), or about a 10-minute drive from the Shomyoji area. Admission is 500 yen for adults, and free for junior high school students and younger. Please check the closing days (such as Mondays) on the official website in advance. The grounds have some uneven terrain, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Light snacks such as shaved ice can also be purchased at the shop.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 45 minutes. The shade of the greenery is coolest in the afternoon, and it's also when the animals are most active.
