About this spot

This temple of the Shingon Risshu sect was founded in the Kamakura period by Hojo Sanetoki (北条実時), and its highlight is a Pure Land-style garden designated as a national historic site. Passing through the Nio Gate (仁王門), a large pond spanned by a vermillion-lacquered arched bridge opens up in front of you, and the seasonal trees reflected on the water make you forget you're in the city. The temple grounds are free to visit, and you can take a leisurely stroll along the gravel paths. Since it's adjacent to the Kanazawa Bunko (金沢文庫) facility, history lovers can also stop by its museum. It's a good place to settle your mind in quiet temple grounds at the start of a bustling day at the seaside.

Tips

About a 12-minute walk from Keikyu Kanazawa-Bunko Station (京急金沢文庫駅), or a bus from Kanazawa-Hakkei Station (金沢八景駅) is convenient. Visiting the grounds and garden is free. The adjacent Kanagawa Prefectural Kanazawa Bunko (神奈川県立金沢文庫) requires a separate admission fee. Use a nearby paid parking lot for parking. This area isn't crowded yet on the day of the summer fireworks festival, so you can take your time viewing it.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Around midday, the shade is cool and it's a good time to see the garden's pond surface clearly.
