About this spot

An ancient shrine representing Hokuriku that has boasted a history of over 1,300 years as the Chief Shrine of Echizen Province. The grand torii gate standing in front of the sanctuary is approximately 11 meters tall and is counted as one of Japan's three great wooden torii gates alongside Kasuga Taisha in Nara and Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima. Its dignified appearance is overwhelming even from the entrance to the approach, and children will naturally look up at its scale. The ancient cedar trees in the sanctuary provide summer shade, and simply walking there brings a refreshing feeling. Before the fireworks festival, this is a representative Tsuruga spot where families want to pray for safety.

Tips

Approximately 5 minutes by taxi from Kehi Pine Grove, or approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Tsuruga Station. Entry to the sanctuary is free. During the Obon period, there are many visitors; adjust your pace based on the spaciousness of the sanctuary and move on promptly. If you wish to receive a shrine seal, check the office reception hours in advance for peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. In the afternoon dappled sunlight, you can leisurely enjoy the views of the grand torii gate and sanctuary.
