Start your day walking through the castle ruins with remaining stone walls and inner moat, experiencing Fukui's history
About this spot
Located approximately a 5-minute walk from JR Fukui Station, in the heart of the city, this is the former residence of the Fukui domain's lord, the Matsudaira family (松平家). Although the main keep was demolished after the Meiji Restoration, the grand stone walls and inner moat remain in excellent condition, faithfully conveying the scale of the castle during the Edo Period. Currently, Fukui Prefecture Government Building and the Prefectural Assembly Building are located within the castle ruins—a rare location in Japan—and the cityscape viewed from atop the stone walls has a unique charm. Walking around the perimeter of the moat alone is quite rewarding, and informational plaques are placed at key points, making it possible to discuss history with children as you walk. The afternoon sun is intense during summer, so don't forget a hat and water. For castle enthusiasts, be sure to note the different stone-stacking methods at the four corners of the castle.

Turn this into a day plan with stall time includedTips
Approximately 5-minute walk from the west exit of JR Fukui Station. Free admission and open year-round. The castle ruins feature paved pathways and are easy to navigate with a stroller. As there are few shaded areas to block the sun, be sure to bring a hat and water during summer months.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. The afternoon, when the sun is slightly lower, offers better definition of shadow and light on the stone walls compared to late morning, making it more impressive to view.
