About this spot

Located in central Iizuka, this is the city's oldest park. Its pond is crossed by the Shigetsu Bridge (指月橋), whose vermilion railings catch the eye, and you can stroll around the pond watching waterfowl and koi. Beloved by residents as a spot known for about 300 cherry trees and roughly 8,000 azaleas, the park also displays a D60 steam locomotive that once hauled coal. With playground equipment for children too, it's a perfect place to have some fun in the crisp late-September air before settling in for the evening fireworks.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from the Former Itō Denemon Residence. Parking is available within the park. The path near the observation deck is uneven, so wear comfortable walking shoes. There's often no permanent shop, so it's a good idea to bring drinks with you in advance. Pack a light jacket in your bag in case it gets cool in the evening.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. The view from the observation deck is at its best in the afternoon, when the light falls across the city.
