Experience Iizuka's History at the Coalmine King's Grand Mansion and 3,000-Tsubo Garden

This mansion was built from the late Meiji period through the Taisho period by Itō Denemon, the foremost coalmine magnate of Chikuho, and is registered as a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The main residence, based on elegant shoin-zukuri architecture, is meticulously crafted with every detail adorned in luxury, and the many furnishings on display vividly convey the lifestyle of the coalmine kings of that era. The spacious garden spanning approximately 3,000 tsubo showcases beautiful seasonal plantings; during autumn visits, the garden trees begin to quietly change color. The residence is also notable as the former home of poet and literary figure Shirakurenai Yanagihara, making it popular among literature enthusiasts. This is a fitting starting point for a day that vividly captures Iizuka's industrial heritage.

飯塚納涼花火大会は、遠賀川中之島を打ち上げ場所とする筑豊地区を代表する花火大会です。約7,000発が1時間30分にわたって夜空を彩り、川沿いの観覧エリアからは花火が真上に近い角度で開く迫力が味わえます。川面に映り込む花火の光が揺れる様子は、川辺の花火大会ならではの見どころです。9月下旬という時期柄、夏の終わりから秋の入口への情緒が漂い、涼しくなった夜風の中で楽しむ花火はひとしお心に残ります。フィナーレの連続打ちで川と空が光で満たされる瞬間は、この1日のクライマックスです。
Tips
荒天時は中止または延期になる場合があるため、当日は飯塚市の公式発表で開催可否を確認してください。終了後は会場周辺の道路と駐車場が大変混み合います。公共交通機関を利用する場合はJR新飯塚駅が最寄りで、終了後は混雑するため時間差での移動が安心です。帰り道の川岸は暗いためスマホのライトや小型ライトを手元に用意しておきましょう。
Tips
About 15 minutes on foot from JR Iizuka Station, or about 5 minutes by car. Admission is 500 yen for adults. Photography rules are posted inside, so check the signage before viewing. The garden takes approximately one hour to walk around completely. During busy times, lines may form at the entrance, so visiting right after opening or in the early afternoon is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 hours required. The soft afternoon light reflects beautifully on the garden's greenery, and the time spent viewing the garden from the veranda is particularly special.
