About this spot

This coastline stretches along the north side of Wakamatsu Ward in Kitakyushu City, facing the Hibiki Sea. The roughly 10 kilometers from Wakita to Iwaya form the gateway to Genkai Quasi-National Park, lined with white sandy beaches and rocky shoals carved by rough waves. At low tide, a flat rock formation called Senjojiki (千畳敷), 200 meters long and 50 meters wide, appears, and the Tomigahana headland (遠見ヶ鼻) is known as a sunset spot where a lighthouse-topped cliff offers views of offshore islands. After watching the sea as the sun lowers, head to the venue. Since the sea breeze turns cold after sunset, it's reassuring to get a jacket out around this time.

Tips

It's reassuring to take care of food and drinks sometime between 17:00 and 18:00. Convenience stores and restaurants around the venue get very crowded from evening onward. Check the location of restrooms early. Some parts of the waterfront have little lighting, so watch your step and choose your spot for the sheet carefully.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. Around sunset, the glow over Dokai Bay and the silhouette of Wakato Bridge have a beauty quite different from the fireworks
