About this spot

This is one of the world's largest wooden domes, built with Akita cedar (秋田杉) and a source of pride for Odate City. With an overwhelming scale of 178m in diameter and 52m in height, you will be amazed by its size just by looking up at it from outside. The warm wood texture of the Akita cedar comes through from the entire structure, making it a spot where you can physically feel Odate's distinctive wood culture. Viewing the exterior is free, and it is also popular for family commemorative photos. During the Odate Daimonji Festival (大館大文字まつり) period, the surrounding area is also lively, letting you enjoy the festival atmosphere from daytime.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Odate Station (大館駅). The exterior can be viewed for free. Depending on whether an event is being held inside, interior viewing may not be possible, so it is best to check the city's official information beforehand. Parking space is available nearby. It is convenient to drive to the next stop, the roadside station (道の駅).

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. On sunny days, the combination of the blue sky and the wooden dome makes for great photos.
