Take a Leisurely Stroll Through a Community Park Built on the Ruins of Ōdate Castle

A park built on the ruins of Ōdate Castle, the castle of the Satake Nishi family who governed Ōdate during the Edo period, adjacent to City Hall and a gathering place for residents. Ōdate Castle was also called "Katsuki Castle," which became the park's name. The grounds preserve remains of the moat and earthen walls, and in spring it becomes a noted cherry-blossom viewing spot cherished by residents. The park paths, surrounded by green lawns and large trees, are flat and easy to walk, with benches scattered throughout—just the right size for an after-lunch digestive stroll. It's a park where peaceful time flows—with grandchildren running across the grass while grandparents watch from benches—where Ōdate's history lives and breathes.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Ōdate Station, located in the center of the city. While the park grounds are flat and easy for grandparents to walk, the open plaza has little shade, so a hat is helpful in summer. It's right next to Akita Inu Kaikan (秋田犬会館), so visiting both incurs minimal travel burden.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. Perfect for a relaxed stroll after lunch. Spring offers cherry blossoms, and summer offers pleasant fresh greenery.
