Around Odate Station (大館駅) there are many restaurants serving dishes made with Hinai jidori chicken (比内地鶏) as well as places where you can enjoy Akita's local cuisine such as kiritanpo hot pot (きりたんぽ鍋). On the day of the Daimonji Festival (大文字まつり), the whole area becomes filled with festival atmosphere from the evening as people head toward the fireworks. The key to a comfortable day is to finish your meal with time to spare before the fireworks start at 20:10. Hinai jidori is one of Japan's three great local chicken breeds and a point of pride for Odate, so be sure to experience its authentic flavor, which can only be tasted here.

Tips

Use restaurants within walking distance of Odate Station (大館駅). Since crowding is expected on the festival day, it is recommended to enter early in the 17:00 hour. After eating, move to the fireworks venue at the Nagiki River riverbank (長木川河川敷) on foot or by car. Parking near the venue fills up early, so check your parking spot in advance.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. An early dinner between 17:00 and 18:00 lets you avoid the crowds before the fireworks.
