About this spot

This is a vast prefectural park in Watanuki-machi, Takasaki (高崎市綿貫町), a cultural zone that is home to the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma (群馬県立近代美術館) and the Gunma Prefectural Museum of History (群馬県立歴史博物館). The grounds are equipped with a lawn plaza and walking paths surrounded by trees, and even the summer sun feels manageable once you step into the shade. There is a plaza where children can run around, making this a perfect starting point on an outing day to spend leisurely time from early afternoon to before evening. It is also nice to drop by the museum to cool off, an ideal choice for a summer day when you want to conserve energy ahead of the fireworks display. The park itself is free to use and has full parking facilities.

Tips

About 20 minutes by local bus from the east exit of Takasaki Station (高崎駅), right by the Watanuki bus stop. If driving, you can use the parking lot inside the park. The museum is air-conditioned, so it can also be used as a place to escape the heat. There are several restrooms inside the park, which are much more comfortable to use than those at the fireworks venue.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. In the early afternoon, there is plenty of shade, making it relatively cool to spend time here.
