Standing on Kannon-yama Hill (観音山丘陵) on the west side of Takasaki, the 41.8m-tall Byakue Dai-Kannon (白衣大観音), built in 1936, is a symbol of the city. This Kannon statue, standing within the grounds of Jigen-in Temple (慈眼院), can be entered, and from shoulder height reached by climbing a spiral staircase, you can look out over central Takasaki and the distant ranges of Mt. Akagi (赤城山) and Mt. Haruna (榛名山). You can also check the direction of the Karasu River (烏川), where tonight's fireworks will launch, during the day, which helps you picture the venue. At the foot of the hill is also Kannonyama Family Park (観音山ファミリーパーク), an area that can be enjoyed even with small children. Souvenir shops also line the approach to the temple.
Tips
About 20 minutes by local bus from Takasaki Station, right by the Kannonyama bus stop. The admission fee to enter the interior is 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for children (elementary school age and under). The interior has a steep spiral staircase, so hold small children's hands firmly. In summer, the breeze on the hilltop is pleasant, but do not forget a hat and to stay hydrated.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. On a clear afternoon, the Kannon statue stands out beautifully against the blue sky, and the view is also at its best.
