About this spot

The Tatebayashi Tezutsu Fireworks Festival is a bold traditional style of fireworks in which bearers hold bamboo tubes packed with gunpowder against their own bodies as they shoot pillars of flame skyward. Unlike launched fireworks, the intensity of having the bearer and the flame share the same space is a special experience you can't get at other fireworks festivals, and the sight of bearers showered in sparks, taking on the flame with their whole body, stirs the hearts of onlookers. The show of light and sound that unfolds on the plaza of Tatebayashi Castle Yume Hiroba (館林城ゆめひろば) is a summer tradition that many spectators look forward to every year. The venue is surrounded by the nature of Shiro-numa Pond (城沼) and the castle ruins, and the flames' reflections on the night-time water surface create a beautiful scene as well.

Tips

Tezutsu hanabi produce a loud bursting sound, so it's reassuring to bring earplugs for small children in advance. Check the festival's official guidance in advance for entry/exit rules and restricted areas at the venue. Also check the official announcement to see whether the event will go ahead in case of bad weather. After it ends, crowds concentrate around the parking areas and toward the station, so it's recommended to wait a little while after the show finishes before heading out.
