The shore of Lake Kasumigaura (霞ヶ浦), Japan's second-largest lake, is a natural stretch of scenery accessible on foot from the center of Tsuchiura City. Along the shore, a well-maintained cycling road and walking path continue on, and the contrast between the endless horizon and the wide sky gives a sense of scale unique to Kasumigaura. November brings clear air, a season when the blue of the lake surface and sky look especially vivid. The Sakura River (桜川), where tonight's fireworks will launch, is also one of the waterways that flows into Lake Kasumigaura. Taking in this lakeside scenery during the day lets you feel the night's fireworks all the more deeply.
Tips
Parking is available around the shore near Tsuchiura Port (土浦港) and Tsuchiura Shinko (土浦新港). On foot, it's about 15-20 minutes south from Kijo Park (亀城公園). The shore can be windy on some days, so a light jacket is reassuring to have. Temperatures drop quickly in the evening, so it's a good idea to start heading back toward the town center after around 4 pm.
Best time to visit
About 1.5 hours needed. In the clear afternoon light you can take your time enjoying the vast view of Lake Kasumigaura
