About this spot
The Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition (土浦全国花火競技大会) is a prestigious contest with a long history, counted alongside Omagari and Nagaoka as one of Japan's three great fireworks competitions. On Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, about 20,000 fireworks are launched from the venue near Gakuen Ohashi Bridge (学園大橋) along the Sakura River (桜川). Unlike an ordinary fireworks display meant simply for viewing, this is a full competition format in which fireworks makers selected from across the country compete by category, such as 'star mine' and '10-go shell,' with each single shell condensing the maker's craftsmanship and aesthetic sense. November's crisp, clear night sky renders the fireworks' colors vividly, giving a quiet intensity distinct from summer fireworks festivals. The excitement that builds toward the finale, and the moment the final grand star mine fills the night sky, form the climax unique to this competition.

Tips
There are both paid viewing seats and a free viewing area. Paid seats require advance purchase through the official website and, being popular, can sell out early. The free area is first-come, first-served on the day, so arrive early to secure a spot. Check the event's official announcements for whether the show will proceed in bad weather. Roads and transportation toward Tsuchiura Station (土浦駅) get very crowded afterward, so either wait a while after the show ends before heading back, or check several possible return train times in advance.
Best time to visit
