About this spot

With about 1,400 years of history, this is Shinshu's foremost ancient temple, long cherished with the saying everyone should visit Zenkoji at least once in their life. It is a temple that has welcomed people of any Buddhist sect, and its National Treasure main hall is stunning, with an imposing, solid great roof. In front of the main hall, be sure to have the whole family rub the statue of Binzuru, said to cure illness wherever it's touched. Venture into the inner sanctuary and you'll find the Okaidan-meguri waiting: feeling your way through a pitch-dark corridor in search of the key to paradise, a slightly thrilling adventure experience for kids.

Tips

Visiting the temple grounds is free, and admission to the inner sanctuary, including the Okaidan-meguri, is around 600 yen for adults (discounted for high school students and younger). The grounds are flat and easy to get around with a stroller, but since the Okaidan-meguri involves stairs, carrying young children is safer. Nearby parking is paid, and it's easier to find a spot the earlier you arrive in the morning. If your child is afraid of the dark, don't push it - visiting just the main hall is plenty enjoyable on its own.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 hours. Around 9am, the grounds are uncrowded and you can worship quietly.
