The shore of Lake Suwa in the evening is a beautiful time as the sun sets behind the western mountains and the lake's surface shifts in color from orange to purple and then to deep indigo. Once you've spread your leisure sheet at the viewing spot, relax with the drinks and snacks you picked up while waiting for the show to begin. Nights at this highland resort, at an elevation of 750 meters, stay cool even in midsummer, and the night breeze off the lake feels pleasant. The lively food stalls are also a treat unique to this time before the fireworks. Enjoy a moment looking back on your day while watching the twilight light reflected on the lake's surface.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from Kami-Suwa Station. Use the restroom early (lines form before and after the show). Some areas along the lakeshore have limited lighting after dark, so a small flashlight can help. Be sure to keep a light jacket or wrap close at hand.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The changing colors of the lake's surface around sunset are the best photo opportunity of the day
