About this spot
Founded in the Muromachi period, this Soto Zen temple is known as a renowned temple of Enshu. Legend has it that Tokugawa Ieyasu visited as a child and, smiling at a drowsy priest, called him "Nemureru Beki Sui" (one who may sleep)—the origin of the temple's name. The expansive grounds feature pavilions connected by corridors, and in summer, cool breezes flow beneath the green tunnel of vegetation. The peony garden deep within the grounds is also famous, but summer's monochromatic greenery brings a calming quietness that steadies the spirit before the fireworks. The temple is also deeply venerated locally as a sacred site for warding off misfortune.

Tips
荒天時の開催可否は大会公式サイトや袋井市の発表で確認を。終了後は周辺道路と駐車場の出庫が大変混み合うため、フィナーレ後は少し時間をおいてから移動するとスムーズです。帰りの河川敷は照明が少なく足元が暗いため、スマホのライトや小さなライトがあると安心です。

About 15 minutes by bus or car from JR Fukuroi Station. Viewing fee is 500 yen for adults (subject to change; check the official website). The grounds are spacious, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Many visitors stop at the shop to purchase daruma figurines and collect temple seals. Bring a hat and stay hydrated, as the summer sun is strong.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Early afternoon is when visitors are relatively sparse, allowing you to leisurely enjoy the green corridors and play of light.
