About this spot

The bronze statue of John Manjiro (Nakahama Manjiro) standing near the Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse commemorates this remarkable figure from Tosa Shimizu City, who drifted away at age 14, crossed to America, and upon returning became a bridge of Japan-America exchange. The statue is positioned as if gazing toward the Pacific Ocean - his birthplace's sea - and its impressive presence blends harmoniously with the cape's landscape, making it a popular spot. Telling children the story of Manjiro while taking commemorative photos creates wonderful memories. Located immediately near the Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse, it's a standard stop to visit alongside the lighthouse tour.

Tips

Just a short walk from Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse. Viewing is free, and no admission procedures are necessary. The surrounding walking trail has some unstable footing, so hold small children's hands. Kongofukuji Temple is about a 5-minute walk from here.

Best time to visit

Approximately 30 minutes required. A quick stop along the cape exploration is the right scale.
