At the Local History Museum built on the hill of Nakamura Castle Ruins, you can view exhibits that introduce the history and culture of Shimanto City. From the observation floor of a building modeled after a castle keep, you can see a panoramic view that stretches from the winding flow of the Shimanto River and the Nakamura city center to the distant Pacific Ocean. It's helpful to check the location of the Red Iron Bridge where tonight's fireworks will launch and the location of the riverbed from the hilltop during the day, making it easier to visualize the evening viewing. The exhibits also explain the clear stream culture of the Shimanto River and the history of sunken bridges, serving as preparation for the afternoon sunken bridge walk. しまんと市民祭納涼花火大会は、四万十市の夏を締めくくる市民手づくりのお祭りの花火大会です。四万十川の河川敷から約6,000発が打ち上がり、広い川面の上で大輪の花が咲き続ける30分間は、日本最後の清流ならではのスケール感があります。花火の光が川面に映り、揺れながら広がる水面の反射は河川敷の観覧席からしか味わえない特別な眺め。赤鉄橋をシルエットに従えた花火の構図は、四万十の夏の象徴的な風景です。市民祭の温かな雰囲気の中で、地元の人々と一緒に楽しむ30分のフィナーレは、1日の旅の締めくくりにふさわしいひとときです。
Tips
荒天時の開催可否は四万十市または大会主催者の公式発表で確認してください。終了後は周辺道路・駐車場の混雑が激しくなるため、花火終了後しばらく河川敷で余韻を楽しんでから移動する時間差帰宅がおすすめです。足元の暗い河川敷の帰り道はライトを活用し、貴重品の管理にも注意してください。

Located in the heart of Shimanto City, about 20 minutes on foot or about 5 minutes by car from Nakamura Station. Admission is approximately 200 yen for adults (confirm on-site). Museum hours are roughly 9 AM to 5 PM, but advance confirmation is recommended. There are uphill paths to the hill, so wear comfortable shoes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. The view from the observation floor is best in the late morning and early afternoon, offering clear views of the Shimanto River's flow.
