Located on the southern shore of Lake Nakaumi, the Yonago Waterbird Sanctuary is an internationally important wetland registered under the Ramsar Convention. A wide variety of migratory birds visit, including tundra swans, tufted ducks, and various sandpipers and plovers, and you can observe them up close from the observation windows and deck inside the facility. In summer you can enjoy the sight of waterbirds living along the shore, and both children and adults find themselves absorbed watching nature at work through binoculars. It is a hidden-gem spot for a quiet moment with Yonago's rich natural surroundings before the fireworks.
Tips
About a 5-minute drive from Minatoyama Park, or about 10 minutes by bus or car from JR Yonago Station. Admission is 310 yen for adults, and free for children (check requirements if the child lives or attends school in the city). Binoculars are available to borrow inside. Closing times vary by season, so check the official website in advance. This is also the point at which to head back toward Yonago Station in the evening.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 30 minutes. Summer afternoons are an active time for the birds along the water's edge.
