Held from 7:40 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, the Sendai River Fireworks Festival launches roughly 10,000 shells along the riverbank of the Sendai River in Satsumasendai City, making it one of the largest summer fireworks festivals in Kagoshima Prefecture. Wide starmines that take advantage of the river's breadth and huge shakudama (giant shells) paint enormous blossoms across the night sky, and the double vision of the fireworks reflected upside-down on the water is a spectacular sight unique to riverside shows. The boom of each launch shakes the air along the river, and the impact you feel in your body is something you can only truly appreciate by experiencing it in person. As the tempo builds toward the finale, the rapid-fire climax is the kind of moment that will have the whole family cheering.

Be sure to check the festival's official announcement for whether the event will proceed in case of bad weather. After it ends at 8:30 p.m., the roads around the venue and Satsumasendai Station get extremely crowded. Rather than rushing to move, it's recommended to linger at the riverbank enjoying the afterglow for a while after the finale, then head to the station once the crowds have thinned out. Some parts of the route home can be dark underfoot, so carrying a small light is a good idea for peace of mind.
