About this spot

Kotohikihama Beach is a sandy beach nationally known for its "singing sand" that squeaks with a high-pitched sound when you walk on it. Located about 10 minutes by car from Hamatsumeuyukihigaura Beach, it features evenly-grained white sand and crystal-clear waters. Walking barefoot along the shore before swimming will delight children with the sound of the sand. While Kotohikihama itself becomes a lively beach in summer, on this day we visit it as a morning stroll spot, saving the main swimming for afternoon at Hamatsumeuyukihigaura. It's a time to slowly enjoy the quiet seaside scenery characteristic of Kyotango.

Tips

For the sand to sing well, dry, sunny days are best. Oil-containing sunscreen or feet with sweat can dampen the sound, so lightly wipe your feet with a towel before touching the sand for better results. It's only a few minutes walk from the parking lot to the beach.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes required. The cool morning hours are pleasant and recommended for walking.
