About this spot

About 20 minutes by car from Takeno Beach, Kinosaki Onsen is one of Japan's leading hot spring towns, with willow trees and wooden ryokan lining the Otani River. Its specialty is 'sotoyu meguri,' touring the seven outdoor bathhouses in a yukata, and stopping at just one lets you spend a moment full of travel atmosphere. Even just strolling along the river has plenty of charm, and with souvenir shops and amusements like shooting galleries dotted around, children can enjoy it without getting bored. Taking in the atmosphere of the hot spring town before swimming is a way to enjoy your trip unique to this region.

Tips

Business hours and closing days vary by bathhouse, so it's reassuring to check in advance. Along the willow-lined street there are many stone-paved sections and small bridges, which can make things tricky with a stroller. A tenugui (hand towel) also makes a nice memento of your bathhouse tour.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Mornings are relatively uncrowded and easy for strolling
